Headspace is an app that offers guided meditation training for people of all ages and provides mindfulness exercises designed to make you more aware. They provide a range of meditations and mindfulness techniques for stress, anxiety, sleep, gratitude, self-esteem – just about anything you can think of.
The creators of the Headspace app wanted to make it so that people could meditate anytime, anywhere. With meditations and breathing techniques as short as five minutes, they creators of Headspace are able to work toward their one mission of improving the health and happiness of the world.
The authenticity behind that goal is exactly what you take away when listening to each Headspace app meditation. And if you can’t hear the genuineness behind Headspace’s lead meditation guide, Andy Puddicombe, then you can gather this from the value and lessons behind his words and teachings. It came as no surprise to us when we learned that Andy, also one of the creators of Headspace, spent ten years training to become a Buddhist monk!
Speaking of messages, one of the things we appreciate about the Headspace app the most is how they value meditation and mindfulness as skills. Rather than preaching, forcing, or making you feel small, Headspace does an excellent job at reminding users that meditation is a skill that takes practice. It’s all about consistency over perfection, which is why it helps that the Headspace app plans out your entire day for you.

There are a few different ways to sign up to headspace that will change the cost. From a 7-day trail to student discount to family plans, below you will find out what works best for you.
A subscription to the Headspace app, or Headspace Plus is $69.99 USD per year, gives you access to hundreds of themed meditations on topics like sleep and stress.
A Headspace subscription also includes Sleep by Headspace, Headspace Move Mode, and Focus Mode, which we will explore later in the blog.
The bottom line is that Headspace has a diverse library of content where there seems to be something for everyone and every purpose. And when you consider the cost and the impact that meditation and mindfulness can have in your life, less than $6 per month is an investment that will likely prove more than worth it.
Is Headspace free?
Unfortunately, Headspace is not free – you have to pay for it. However, there are different membership options available, so you can choose one that suits your budget. They offer a free option that includes the first level of their Basic’s Course, so you can try ten full sessions before making any decisions.
Note that if you’re interested in the annual subscription, you can have 14 days free, and if you “sign up” for the monthly plan, you get a 7-day trial. You won’t be charged for either until the trial runs up, but to get the trial, you do have to submit your payment information for automatic processing when that time comes.
Downloading the app itself is free, but the cost of Headspace varies depending on your choice of subscription:

Headspace student discount
The Headspace app offers a generous discount for students at just $9.99 per year.
Currently, the Headspace Student plan is only open to students within the United States who are attending a degree-granting Title IV college or university. Hopefully, this can expand someday, but the other great thing is it’s also available to part-time students – not just full-time and graduate students.
Headspace family plan
The Headspace app has a family plan to add six accounts for $99.99 USD each year. With this plan, one owner invites family members to join their plan. So, if you already have an individual plan but decide that this is better for you and your household, you can upgrade to this at any time and receive a prorated credit back in your account.
Headspace for educators
Easily one of the coolest things about this app’s offerings is that educators receive free access. This includes all K-12 teachers, school administrators, and supporting staff in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
With the Headspace app, educators all over can bring more calm and focus into their classrooms and teach their students invaluable lessons and techniques that can stick with them forever.
Key features of Headspace
The headspace app has a lot of variety and options to help your meditation, sleep and movement goals. I found these four features stood out to me the most while while using the service.
Did you know that Headspace is now streaming on Netflix? Has it popped on the home page for any of you guys?
It’s so refreshing to see an app like Headspace that already makes meditation so relatable and easy to understand. With their Netflix series, the Headspace app takes another big step to reach more people who probably don’t even know that they need meditation in their lives or even what it is.
The name of their Netflix series is called Headspace Guide to Meditation.
Though they also have a Guide to Sleep and an interactive special called Unwind Your Mind.
They’ve released one season since it premiered in June of this year, and it has eight episodes that are all around 20 minutes long. The first episode introduces meditation and explains its basics, allowing viewers to try a guided meditation focused on the breath.
Each episode has a theme, such as letting go, dealing with pain, and achieving your potential. But you don’t need to necessarily relate to a certain episode title or have a specific goal in mind to benefit from this series overall. This series in general can teach you how to be less stressed and distracted so you can get more enjoyment and fulfillment out of life.
The episodes go over various techniques, explaining when you might use them and how they can be useful in certain life situations. Finally, at the end of each episode, you have the chance to do a guided meditation.
Let’s talk about one of the most loved aspects of the Headspace app, other than the main meditation section. Headspace Sleep is a section of the app with content designed specifically to help you sleep.
The sleep section includes sleep music and soundscapes (like rain and ocean sounds) to help you relax and drift off to sleep, and guided meditations to help you fall back asleep when you awake in the middle of the night. They also have a sleep radio, including a few 8-hour mixes of sounds you can sleep to all night.
One truly innovative section of Headspace sleep is their sleepcasts. A Headspace sleepcast is a story, each about 45 minutes long. It begins with a wind-down (meditation or breathing exercise) before moving into a dreamy landscape narration.
The sleepcasts are told from a 2nd person point of view, guiding you through these cozy, descriptive places in soft, comforting voices. For example, a sleepcast might take you through a botanical garden or a rainforest.
There isn’t exactly a plot to the stories; they are more centered around visualization. The descriptive elements of the sleepcasts help bring your awareness away from yourself and your problems, stress, or anxiety.
Not to mention that your brain thrives on habits. Once you get your brain in the habit of sleep stories before bed, it becomes a trigger, telling your brain to relax and that it’s time to sleep. It’s a lot like how stories helped many of us to fall asleep as children.
One other helpful element is how Headspace slightly changes each story nightly. So, you might click on the same sleepcast where most of it will sound familiar, but the details change enough so you cannot memorize it or know what’s coming next. This speaks to just how intentional Headspace is about designing their sleep section. When someone knows what to expect, it welcomes in the element of time passage, which can cause anxiety – the opposite of the right conditions needed for restful sleep.
The Headspace Move section has a good variety of exercise options, from quick HIIT workouts to beginner or mindful cardio. Each session is anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, so everyone has options in terms of time, fitness level, and goals or intentions.
The Feel-Good Yoga section is helpful in the way that it’s structured. There’s a good morning section with options ranging from an 8-minute check-in and stretch to a 45-minute energizing flow. There are sections for daytime flows when you need quick breaks or to focus on your posture. There also yoga classes for stress and anxiety relief and sessions you can do before bed.
Another fun way to help break up your day and re-energize is with Headspace’s Lincoln Center Dance Breaks. Each clip is just a minute or two, where you can learn dance moves from around the world like the Flamenco or Samba.
While there are a few options on this section to get your blood pumping and heart rate up, don’t expect this app to be your one-stop-shop for exercise – especially if you prefer higher intensity exercises. However, the underlying focus of this section is about focusing on the breath and movements, which is important for everyone to be reminded of – regardless of their fitness level.
The bottom line is that it’s a nice feature to have the Headspace app in your pocket when you need something specific, like when you’re traveling or need a quick jump start to your workday.
The fourth point of interest of the Headspace app is called Headspace Focus. This section is designed specifically for work and focusing, including meditation playlists and curated music to help keep you on track.
As for the music, this focus tab features tracks from world-renowned artists like Hans Zimmer and playlists curated by artists like John Legend and Arcade Fire with their favorite hits and melodies.
There’s also a 95-minute Lo-Fi beats playlist which can be great for working. But if you prefer less of an instrumental or hip-hop vibe, the soundscapes are great for sounds like waterfalls and cabin downpours. There are many options here, and they are all 3D recordings from places around the world!
When it comes to focusing, it’s not just about the music. One super helpful feature that doesn’t seem to be as well-known is the meditations for regaining focus in the middle of a workday or study session. So, when you’re working, you might try their quick meditation designed specifically for switching tasks or one for breaking in the middle of the day.
As for students, there are meditations for everything from exam prep to developing healthier mindsets and relationships with technology, interviews, presentations, and even leaving home. What a great concept and resource for students, right?
Finally, there is another section under focus designed specifically for sports performance and concentration. Under the focus tab, the Headspace for Movement section includes meditations for motivation, competition, recovery, and rehab which athletes and exercise enthusiasts may find helpful.

Headspace vs. Calm
While I love that both Headspace and Calm offer various searchable meditations and topics, I prefer to use Headspace regularly. Not only does Headspace plan out your whole days’ worth of content for you, but it’s super easy to navigate, bright and airy with its voices and colors, and overall pleasant to use.

Headspace vs. Insight Timer
Headspace offers many great features such as a sleep and focus (music) section that make it a terrific go-to app for all things mindset and wellness. That said, I’ve often felt that it only brushes the surface of many topics, whereas, with an app like Insight Timer, you have the potential to learn so much from people all over the world – not to mention a massive section of live exercise and yoga sessions. So, Insight Timer takes the win for me on this one.
Headspace vs. Ten Percent Happier
The main difference between the Headspace app and the Ten Percent Happier app is that it’s easier to find things on the 10% Happier app. Headspace and Ten Percent Happier are similar in how content is organized and how searchable everything is. This is a close one, but I’d have to go with Ten Percent Happier because I find the titles of each meditation to be more specific. Therefore, it’s easier to discover what you need or some things you don’t even know you do.
Headspace vs. Sam Harris Waking Up
The main difference between the Headspace app and the Waking Up app is the Headspace app makes it easier to accomplish your meditation goals. When it comes to which meditation app is better between these two, it depends largely on what you’re looking for and possibly where you are now in your practice. Headspace is known for its beginner-friendliness and, therefore, its wonderfully intuitive and colorful aspect.
I am 100% behind all the important content that Sam Harris offers because it truly does wake us up to more that I think we all should know about meditation. Still, if I had to choose an app that makes it easy to literally wake up daily and accomplish your meditation goals, I would have to go with Headspace.
Headspace vs. Buddhify
The main difference between the Headspace app and the Buddhify app is the Headspace app is overall easier to use. Buddhify is like that underdog app that you really want to “win” but, it just doesn’t have the same great visual appeal as other apps, including the space to provide clear titles indicating what each meditation is about. That said, where Buddhify lacks interface-wise, it makes up for it with its quality meditations and down-to-earth features of sharing with others. They both cover similar topics in thoughtful ways, but I must choose Headspace for ease of use.
Headspace vs. Unplug
The main difference between the Headspace app and the Unplug app is the simplicity of the Unplug app. Headspace and Unplug offer great content on various helpful and commonly searched topics. Given Unplug’s simplicity, Headspace certainly has a lot more going on, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. Headspace may have more to offer, such as new meditations and courses ready for you on its home page daily, but this can also be overwhelming. If you’re the type of person, like me, who wants to feel like even one small effort is enough, go with Unplug – it’s so simple and stress-free!
Headspace vs. Simple Habit
The main difference between the Headspace app and the Simple Habit app is that Headspace offers more to the user. Headspace and Simple Habit are great apps for any level of meditation practitioner. They both offer great similar features and content like soundscapes and sleep stories. However, when comparing side by side, I think that Headspace’s features and offerings are richer and more expansive, which is why my vote is for Headspace.

The Headspace app makes meditation simple and fun. It has fantastic graphics on everything from its 1-minute wake-up breathing exercises to its almost hour-long sleepcasts. It’s refreshing to have an app like Headspace that makes meditation practical, relatable, simple, and accessible rather than serious.
