Is Buddhify a good app?

Before we get into all the details of this Buddhify app review, let’s first cut to the chase. If you’re wondering if Buddhify is a good app, I can tell you from my experience that it is!

Apart from its main feature, the lovely rainbow meditation wheel, I will say that I think it lacks in terms of visual appeal. At least compared to other apps like Headspace or Calm, with their pleasant and attractive animations and icons. Still, the more I used this app, the more I understood one big reason people appreciate it so much – its simplicity.

Buddhify is a wonderful tool for anyone who wants a quick and easy way to meditate over their average day. The app is simple to use and has various guided meditations to suit all moods and needs.

How much does the Buddhify App cost?

The Buddhify app costs $4.99 to download from the Apple Store. The Google Play Stores offers the App for $3.99.

Users who want access to more features can upgrade to a Buddhify Membership – an annual subscription for $30. This subscription automatically renews one year from signing up unless you cancel beforehand.

While I haven’t had to purchase any other meditation apps so far just to download them, the nice thing about Buddhify is that you can still access all the app’s great content and functionalities without a membership. There is no free trial and no gimmicks, just a down-to-earth, small family business looking to offer more features for those who want to deepen their practice.

Who created Buddhify?

Rohan Gunatillake created the Buddhify app to combine his passion for meditation, design, and innovation. The more Rohan realized that the busy, digital life he was living felt so different from what he was learning through mindfulness, the more he began to dedicate his time and efforts to integrating traditional mindfulness with the realities of modern daily life.

We couldn’t be more on board with this concept because people need to realize that they can practice mindfulness without sitting like Buddha. Because that’s what Rohan wanted this app to be all about – delivering mindfulness practices inclusively and authentically, based on what you’re doing, rather than forcing you to find 20 quiet minutes a day to do it.

As such, Buddhify is widely recognized as an app that offers mindfulness and meditation on the go. Rohan’s value of accessible meditation is apparent from the moment you open the app and see Buddhify’s colorful meditation wheel – filled with meditations for whatever you’re doing or however you’re feeling.

How to use Buddhify

The Buddhify app is simple to use. After you sign up and create an account, you can choose from various guided meditations.

The app doesn’t start by asking you a ton of personal questions like most other meditation apps to curate content. It jumps right into offering something useful that I wish the other more complex apps did: how to use Buddhify app. And that’s essentially what I want to walk you through now in this Buddhiy app review, offering first-hand insights, pros, cons, and more about this app along the way.

How to use Buddhify's Meditation Wheel

When using Buddhify, you can find guided meditations for different activities or feelings. The sessions last from 4 to 30 minutes and are written and voiced by their diverse core team of hand-picked teachers.

The Buddhify app has a “Meditation Wheel” that you use to find the right meditation for you. The wheel is divided into different categories for activities, such as Walking and Work Break, or feelings, like Stress & Difficult Emotion or Going to Sleep.

To use the Buddhify app’s “Meditation Wheel,” open up the app and select the category you resonate with.

After selecting a category, Buddhify will display a second smaller wheel with the meditations available in that category. You must hold down on the meditation to learn more about each one and see what it offers. Otherwise, if you tap one, it will begin to play.

Even though the app reminds you of this at the top of the screen, I overlooked it. I randomly chose a meditation entitled “Rain,” under the category “Stress & Difficult Emotion 1”, because rainy weather seemed pretty fitting for how I was feeling! But had I read the description first, it wouldn’t have taken me until the end of meditation to realize that it was an acronym-based meditation.

This essential R.A.I.N. (Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Nurture) acronym and technique was pioneered by Tara Brach, a psychologist and author who also teachers this technique on the app 10% Happier. Tara also has several courses available on Calm.

Buddhify also features the time remaining at the bottom of the screen during your practice. You can close out of a meditation session at any time. Still, for any that you finish, Buddhify will prompt you to either save that meditation as a favorite, share it, play it again, or play another, returning you to the wheel.

You can also favorite a meditation by holding down on the session in the wheel – the same way and screen you pull up the session description. This feature isn’t all that unique, as all meditation apps seem to have it. But one thing that sets Buddhify apart from the rest is your ability to customize the app!

Customizing the meditation wheel

There is an option for “Edit Wheel” within the app’s main menu, which you can access by clicking the blue bar at the bottom of the app.

With the edit wheel option, you can add more categories of interest to your meditation wheel. For example, “At the Gym,” “Plane Travel,” or “Eating.” I went ahead and added “Stress & Difficult Emotion 2” because who doesn’t need more of that?

At any rate, I was confused why my wheel displayed categories such as that one, and “Walking 1” and “Traveling 1”. I thought maybe I was missing something even though I purchased a membership, but nope, those categories are available for everyone to customize their wheel fully!

Would it have been nice if some of these details, like the names and descriptions, were clearer at first? Sure. But it didn’t take long to figure everything out, which is more than I can say for other apps that can get pretty busy. This app may be colorful, but it sticks to one clear focal point – one home page and one menu page.

Main features of the Buddhify app

You will find a subset of blue sections with symbols within your colorful meditation wheel. Clicking anywhere in that blue area will pull up other unique app features.

For all users, this includes the features Foundations and Give.

Foundations

A Foundations section is an invaluable part of any meditation app. Because while meditations are great, it helps to understand why you’re doing certain things and how it works.

There’s certainly some good insight offered in these brief 1-5 minute reads, covering some basics such as a brief history of mindfulness and making meditation a habit. However, this section might be more useful if users could listen to the sessions. Or if there were more rhyme or reason to how they are listed, such as an order or way to keep track of your progress.

Give

The Give feature on the Buddhify app is a nice way of sharing mindfulness with others. You can send a meditation to a loved one through the Give section, whether they’re having a hard time or you want to send one to them for general messages and reminders like awareness or kindness.

Once you select your options, Buddhify will provide the top meditations to send them. This section also has a place to click if you already know what specific meditation you want to send. However, if that’s the case, you may as well use the share button within each meditation rather than take that extra step through the menu.

Solo Timer

The Solo Timer can be found within the app’s main menu for you to meditate without guidance. With the solo timer, you can set your time from anywhere between 1-60 minutes, and you can set your sound type to double bass, bell, or chimes to notify you when your time is up (and in intervals, which can be a helpful reminder to bring you back if your mind wanders).

The following three features are only included with a paid yearly Buddhify membership:

Transmission

Transmission is a cool and unique feature that you definitely won’t find on any other meditation app. They call it a karaoke-style feature because you can read one of their meditations (which is prompted on the screen for you) in your voice to share with people you love.

Formal

The Formal section is where you want to go if you are looking for longer guided meditations. Here you can do everything from body scans to learning techniques to deepen your awareness skills. Each meditation is based on core techniques that can help any practitioner.

The only drawback, it seems, is that you have to download the meditation before you can play it. I suppose this would be useful if you truly are using this app for on-the-go purposes and ever need to access it without a Wifi connection.

Together

Finally, the Together section is a community-friendly space to explore video courses and stories from the Buddhify community. You can explore all kinds of interesting topics in these very brief posts with insight from people who feel called to share them. There are also Q&As and video series, such as one that Rohan leads called “How to Design Your Own Meditations.” Essentially, the Together tab is a good place to turn if you seek inspiration or new skills.

Meditation Apps: Never Alone Review Guide

To help you decide between the top meditation apps out there in the market, we spent multiple weeks using each of them and breaking down our findings. Now that you have heard all Buddhify app has to offer, read how it compares to the other meditation apps on the market and which app we think is best between them.

Buddhify vs. Headspace

Between Headspace and Buddhify, there’s one app I keep coming back to, which is Headspace. The sessions are easy to follow – the app incorporates guided exercises that help you focus your mind while also providing background information on what each meditation is about. While Buddhify does this for some of its meditations, I appreciate the overall consistency of Headspace. 

Buddhify vs. Calm

My vote for Calm over Buddhify isn’t necessarily a matter of one having better content than the other. Plus, it’s hard to say that one app is better because it depends on what you plan to use these apps for. Both have some great distinct features, but, at least for me, I turn to Calm more because of its excellent music and sleep-related content. For this reason, and its ability to appeal to more users, I vote for Calm.

Buddhify vs. Insight Timer

The best app for spiritual growth is not always the most popular one with the most massive content library. I love using Buddhify because it’s so simple and easy to use – but I must wonder what happens when you run out of content relatively quickly? Taking the content aspect into account and the features that I find more useful and practical (i.e., Insight Timer’s live exercise classes vs. Buddhify’s Transmission), my vote is for Insight Timer.

Buddhify vs. Ten Percent Happier

Ten Percent Happier and Buddhify are super easy to use and filter through to find what you’re looking for. These two are neck-and-neck for me! Because Ten Percent Happier offers a clearer overview of what to expect when searching for meditations, I have to go with Ten Percent Happier over Buddhify. Not only that, but Ten Percent Happier’s meditations feature introductions, so the user isn’t forced to just dive immediately into a meditation, lesson, or breathing exercise.

Buddhify vs. Sam Harris Waking Up

I believe Sam Harris’s Waking Up app will ultimately have a greater impact on its users than Buddhify. Sam Harris demonstrates a significant understanding of meditation and shares how one can achieve enlightenment. Waking Up isn’t like any other meditation app – so it’s nothing against Buddhify. This app is great for helping its users grow while still examining and accepting their humanness – something many other apps lack these days.

Buddhify vs. Unplug

While most other meditation apps these days have a lot of fluff, Buddhify and Unplug aren’t like that. They get right down to the basics, which speaks more volumes than you’d think. So, for those who want an app they can turn to any time of day – whether to help them unwind after work without having to devote an hour of their time or more, Buddhify and Unplug are perfect. So, most of what’s left to compare are purely meditation content, and I have to go with Unplug because of its wide variety of topics and courses led by experts in each field.

Buddhify App Review: The Takeaway

Buddhify is a great mindfulness tool for those interested in exploring ways to incorporate meditation into their lives or share their meditation practice with others.

While full access to almost all the app’s content costs about the same as your average cup of joe, the fact is that it costs more download than it does others. So it’s understandable that you’d want to make sure Buddhify aligns with your needs before downloading it, and we hope this Buddhify app review has helped to answer that!

All that said, remember that any money you put towards this app goes back into making this app even better! Because Buddhify is entirely self-funded and run by a team that genuinely cares about serving our needs rather than investors.

They are a small team of four who charge a small upfront fee in a market dominated by monthly subscriptions and free apps. Yet this awesome team at Buddhify still offers free content on the app and even on their website.
